The Stacked Stones Valley (Valle de Piedras Encimadas) is a series of small valleys located in the Zacatlán municipality of Puebla State in central Mexico. The main feature of the Stacked Stones Valley is basalt rock formations in capricious forms, created by erosion over millions of years. The valley has been defined as covering anywhere from 100 to 400 hectares. The rock formations have their origin during the Cenozoic era about 66 million years ago with volcanic activity.
"Las Piedras Encimadas are rock outcrops. The main natural attraction of the area is the numerous, fascinating and photogenic "stacked rock” formations. which can easily be likened to people (soldiers, sentries) and animals (dinosaurs, elephants, turtles) depending on the sensibilities of the observer.
The shape of many of the blocks of rock forming the Piedras Encimadas suggests that they were originally weathered deep underground from chemical reactions as water percolated slowly down towards the water table.
